What inspires me
I find inspiration in: nature: sunrises, long and winding paths, forests full of trees, streams, owls hooting. people-watching: observing emotions, finding the small moments of affection between two people, watching mischief play out, little points of triumph…I like the small moments that people exchange. Or any being exchanges with another, for that matter. I like watching animals...

Anonymous asked: Hi Heather, this is Meredith from First Coast No More Homeless Pets.I stumbled across your page as I was browsing pics from the adoption event. Dianne is out of town, I wasn't able to find your email address. Do you have or know who has the original photos from the weekend? Best Friends Animal Society wants to do a story on some of the pets adopted there but they need high-quality pics. We...

What I've learned in my first week in Arizona
1. It’s true. It’s super dry here. Your nose will bleed. It’s also true that it’s a “dry” heat. I’m so glad to be rid of the Midwestern humidity. But it’s still freaking hot. You have to drink more water than you ever thought possible. 2. The Phoenix real estate market reminds me of black Friday. Be prepared to be crazy, exhausted and broke at the...

// How to go running when you really don't want...
dobetternow: Step 1: Drink a crap ton of water. Step 2: Put on running clothes. Step 3: Dance around a bit. Step 4: Put on running socks and shoes. Step 5: Go on Tumblr and be distracted/inspired for 2 minutes. Step 6: Get out the door. Step 7: RUN.

One car. Two people. Four years.
Four years ago, my husband decided to pursue his first college degree full-time. We sold his car and set out to explore our new territory in the Chicago western suburbs together in our little Toyota Corolla. By explore, I mean drive to work every day and occasionally venture out on a weekend. We’re now approaching his graduation in June, and the ensuing lifestyle change (oh yea, plus a...

During a run
brain: why are you going so slow?
lungs: I currently hate you.
feet: I'm gonna turn into 10 pound weights now.
Legs muscles: I am going to start hurting in random places, kay?
Sidewalk: I really want to trip you in one of my holes or bumps.
People in cars: *hoooonk* Run Forrest Run!
People walking: nice ass baby
Me: Why do I do this to myself?
Me:
Me:
Me at end of run: I love running so much! I would never give this up!

Oh, crap. A rut.
I haven’t run in 5 days. As I lie in bed my body and mind are hating me for it. My body isn’t as tired as usual, so sleep isn’t coming easily. Guess its time to fess up: I am in a rut. But hey, it’s not like there isn’t anything going on in my life right now and I’m just being lazy (see my last post!). There may be a little laziness mixed in there (and...

Encounter in the Woods
On my bike ride home today, I passed a group of Marine Corps recruits training in the forest preserve. Everything about their presence in the woods was a juxtaposition. Their voices were loud against the rush of water and the birds chirping. Their bright colors stood in contrast against the dead earth. They stood on the portion of the forest preserve paved in cement to protect a dam, not the soft...

The games we play in our heads
Some days, the only way I get myself out the door and on the trail or track is by playing mind games with myself. “Of course you’re tired. You’re always tired. If you never ran when you were tired you’d never run.” “Stop making excuses. There are people in the world who’ve run every day for 20 years/hike in the desert in Afghanistan to save...
