Not a Short Story

As much as I'd like to be

One car. Two people. Four years.

Four years ago, my husband decided to pursue his first college degree full-time. We sold his car and set out to explore our new territory in the Chicago western suburbs together in our little Toyota Corolla. By explore, I mean drive to work every day and occasionally venture out on a weekend.

We’re now approaching his graduation in June, and the ensuing lifestyle change (oh yea, plus a cross-country move).

I am quite frankly dreading the possibility of getting another car.

Yea, we save money on gas and insurance and blah blah blah. But the real reason I enjoy our one-car lifestyle is that my husband and I have spent an extra 20-30 minutes together almost every weekday morning since 2008.

Without the one-car deal, we would never take the time to talk to each other as we rush out of the house. I am never on time in the morning (especially if I go for a long run). And I get cranky about it.

But I love our morning car ride. That man knows how to get me to unclench. Some days he spends those 20 minutes getting the most ridiculous songs stuck in my head. Some days we don’t talk at all. Sometimes we argue. Other days we focus on whatever ridiculous news is on the talk radio station that day and commiserate about the sad state of humanity.

Cute husband, on the road again…

I so enjoy those extra minutes, our breakfasts of english muffins with peanut butter, that smooch as he drops me off in the parking lot, or the extra wave as he walks away to class.

I’m sure going to miss that routine if we lose it.
